In collaboration with the Samarthan- Centre for Development Support and SBI Foundation, the SBI Gram Seva program has been launched in five villages of Kanker district, where 90% of the population is tribal and completely dependent on agriculture. With the aim of improving their nutrition and livelihood, scaffolding cultivation was done in 100 families of 5 villages.
Under the Gram Seva program, the Didis were trained about scaffolding cultivation through videos and were also given training on nursery plantation. After preparing the nursery, they were trained on making scaffolding for cultivating ladder crops. Once the scaffolding was ready, they were given information about planting and manure management, followed by regular monitoring, weeding, pest control, and crop harvesting.
The results were remarkable. The 100 Didis from the 5 villages were able to produce a surplus of vegetables, not only for their own consumption but also for sale. This was the first time they had been able to produce enough vegetables to sell, significantly increasing their income.
Quantifiable Impact:
The program has demonstrably improved the lives of the participating families. Here’s a breakdown of the impact:
- Number of farmers: 100
- Total area covered: 50 acres
- Increased income per family: ₹9,750
- Total income generated: ₹9,75,000
This method is an excellent technique for good production of ladder crops in Kharif season, as it protects the crops from damage due to rain, makes the crops shine, and makes it easier to care for and harvest them.
Samarthan- Centre for Development Support and SBI Foundation are continuously striving to improve the livelihood of the villagers through this program
